WASHINGTON (AP) a' No listing of good NCAA championship game occasions is complete until Keith Smart's jumper for Indiana in 1987 is about it. Known in not as complimentary terms by Syracuse dedicated as "The Shot," and known by Hoosiers fans to this day, that 16-foot jumper from the left side with 5 seconds to play is just a film clip staple throughout March. The memory of "The Shot," which offered Indiana a 74-73 success, is still with Smart, now the coach of the Sacramento Kings, while it was revisited by Jim Boeheim, still the coach at Syracuse, every day for 16 years. "It is almost every day," Smart mentioned Wednesday when asked how frequently he thinks about the jumper that made him a in Bloomington and a villain in Syracuse. "Probably every other day some thing happens. I'll go anywhere to eat, or once we travel, I look at the hotel and someone sees the name tag on the case and they'll mention something about 'The Shot' then. Very seldom does weekly go by without something that happens." Boeheim knew precisely how long it took for him to avoid thinking about Smart's play on a regular basis. "We played perfectly in the game. When you lose a game that way, it never is really almost never got over by you. I got over it in 2003," Boeheim said, referring to the Orange's first national title, performed in the same creating a ' the New Orleans Super Dome. "I probably considered it for all those 16 years all of the time. "I never contemplate it anymore. Mentor (Bob) Knight was great after the game. He told me we'd gain it and get back, he only didn't tell me it would take 16 years. He is smart, not that smart." "The Shot" has been summoned from the archives a lot more than usual this week because Indiana and Syracuse can meet in the East Regional semifinal Thursday night, their next meeting since the national championship game, but the first in the NCAA tournament. "Probably this year more than anything, you had more people speak about its significance," Smart said. "Even when I saw the supports, I said, 'The chance of these coming together is quite high.' And lo and behold it came into play. Because it just happened against Syracuse.", you hear slightly more talk because of this now A fantastic championship game came right down to the last moment. With 38 seconds left, Syracuse's Howard Triche a the uncle of recent Orange guard Brandan Triche a' made the first of two free throws for a 73-70 lead. Six seconds later Smart obtained to slice the cause one. Four seconds later, Syracuse freshman Derrick Coleman, who finished with 19 rebounds, missed leading end of a 1-and-1. His players had been taken by boeheim off the lane, conceding the recovery. Smart got the rebound. The play was likely to go to Steve Alford, the current coach at New Mexico, who had already built six 3-pointers in the very first NCAA tournament played with a 3-point range. "It was designated for Steve, obviously, but we moved the ball around," Indiana's Daryl Thomas stated that Monday night. "It stumbled on me and I started it out to Keith and he hit the basket." Wise, among the first junior university transfers to play for Knight, summed up the play at the postgame news conference. "Tonight was my turn. ... I thank Daryl for fainting to me and maybe not taking the final picture. ... It was a smart decision on his part." Twenty-six years later Smart is still talking about "The Shot" because people retain asking him about it. "I understand it. Every person, child, woman, man or child, they desire to talk about as soon as or when it happened," he said what they were doing. "I do not know this person and this person comes up with all this excitement, what am I likely to do? 'Nah, nah, I actually do not want to speak to you'? Nah. That is your time and if you like to talk about, let us talk. It's likely to be temporary anyway. I will perhaps not rain on their parade or anything like that." Intelligent is quick to recall the first time he talked with Boeheim about this. "When we were planning for the draft, kind of doing some background on various players, I called Jim Boeheim since I was taking a look at Dion Waiters. I called to get some data on Dion," Smart said, talking about the Syracuse guard who went on to function as No. 4 over all pick by Cleveland last June. He was called by "i. I mentioned, 'Coach, this can be a name from yesteryear .' He answers the phone and states, 'A name from the past '? I said, 'This is Keith Smart. Instructor Smart.' He said, 'Keith Smart, Keith Wise, Keith Wise. Let me tell you: it took me a long time to obtain over that.' I explained, 'Coach, I'd not have called you if you had not gained one. I had have had somebody else provide you with a call.' We had a good discussion after that." He was said by brandan Triche and much time hasn't been spent by his uncle referring to the game. "I have seen him play, but I have not seen the specific whole game," said Triche, who said he gets called Howard sometimes. "I think seeing, it absolutely was such as a missed assignment. I've not directly talked to him about it." As with all plays that determine a tournament there are the two sides and their reaction. "It is definitely difficult whenever you drop in the title game, the last game of the last shot," Boeheim and the year said. "That is always a difficult thing." Wise said his present people and family are demonstrating his college coach proper. "They replay all of it enough time, every year," Smart said of his people. "They all went along to school and when Indiana gets defeat somewhere, they're usually like, 'Oh, Indiana dropped or this or that.' But I'll always have the final laugh. I performed at Indiana and I won. "That is what Coach Knight believed to us after the game, 'You men have no idea what you've done. Sure, you've won a championship. But it will not really sink in until it is 25 or 30 years from now, whenever your kids see it. That stumbled on fruition about 15 years ago, my son was probably around 10. We were awaiting the competition ahead on, and they confirmed 'The Shot.' My daughter goes, 'Dad, look at you'! I was like, 'Wow, great.' That night exactly like Coach said after the game. It came true." Etc AP Sports Writer Antonio Gonzalez in Sacramento, Calif., contributed for this statement.
