When looking at rankings, we have to add some context so that the numbers aren't skewed or looked at incorrectly. With the Diamondbacks, the overall rankings aren't that bad, but it's because of a couple of key areas that they're overachieving in.
They're the No. 1 team in the National League in fielding percentage, at .993. Those unearned runs are often the difference between winning and losing 10-15 games per year. That's a huge deal. That terrific defense overcomes a lot of poor pitching, which brings us to the next point.
The starting pitching, thought to be a strength, has been horrid at the top. Ian Kennedy is 1-2 with a 5.47 ERA. Brandon McCarthy is 0-2 with a 7.06 ERA. Even Trevor Cahill, with his respectable 3.60 ERA, is 0-3.
This team has shown no speed on the basepaths, with just five as a team in 18 games. But, as with the fielding saving the pitching to an extent, the opportunistic Diamondbacks have scored runs in other ways. They're No. 1 in the National League in sacrifice flies (9).
