Just days after signing a one-year contract and receiving a second chance with the Baltimore Ravens, linebacker Rolando McClain was arrested Sunday in his hometown of Decatur, Ala., after being charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, according to Monique Jones and Jeff Zrebiec of The Baltimore Sun.
The Ravens did not want to comment until more details about the arrest emerged, saying only (via team spokesman Kevin Byrne), "We are seeking more facts on this. The only information we have at this time is from news reports."
According to Zrebiec , more details of the arrest have come to light, and they do not bode well for McClain and his hopes of making the Ravens' roster:
If all of these allegations against McClain are true, this is the lack of common sense that the former first-round pick exhibited while with the Oakland Raiders that made the team's decision to cut him an easy one.
After signing McClain this offseason, Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome told The Baltimore Sun about the troubled linebacker's chance to make the team and how the franchise would handle his conduct:
Rolando is just getting an opportunity to come and make our 53-man roster. That's it. ... As for how he is going to conduct himself here, he is coming here just to be a part of this football team. I think the guys in the locker room will be able to provide him with the proper guidance that he needs as to the way John wants his football team and his football players to be.
There is a very good chance that Ravens officials feel that these offenses are egregious and detrimental to the team, and there is little doubt that franchise will consider cutting the linebacker.
As Zrebiec's tweets indicate, this isn't the first time McClain has had trouble with the law, either. McClain had his most recent run-in with the law (prior to Sunday's arrest) on Jan. 8 of this year, after being arrested for lying to police about his identity (h/t NFL.com).
McClain was also arrested in May of 2012 and charged with four misdemeanors (h/t ESPN), but that case was dropped after McClain reportedly came to a financial agreement with the accuser.
The long history of problems with the law and a contract that can easily be voided are all signs that point to the Ravens cutting their ties with McClain and addressing their need at middle linebacker in the draft.
